Introduction to the Three Structures of Closed Cooling Tower: Counterflow, Crossflow and Mixed Flow
 27/04/2025

In industrial production, closed cooling towers, as important heat exchange equipment, play a vital role. They use the heat exchange principle between air and water to transfer the heat of the working fluid to the water, and then take it away through water circulation to achieve the purpose of cooling. Today, let's talk about the three major types of closed cooling towers: countercurrent, crossflow and mixed flow, and see how they differ.

1. Countercurrent closed cooling tower: compact and efficient, low-temperature cooling artifact

As the name suggests, the air intake of the countercurrent closed cooling tower is the bottom countercurrent intake, that is, the air and water flow in the opposite direction. This design allows the air and water to interweave in the tower to form saturated humid air, and the heat is discharged through the top fan. The water is returned to the water collection tank through a specially structured dehydrator for recycling. The countercurrent cooling tower does not have a pre-cooling heat dissipation filler, so the unit heat dissipation area of the coil is larger, the structure is more compact, and the footprint is smaller. It is particularly suitable for cooling fluids with low temperatures or small temperature differences, and can achieve high efficiency and energy-saving cooling effects.

2. Crossflow closed cooling tower: Scaling suppression, preferred for high-temperature cooling

Unlike the counterflow type, the air intake of the crossflow closed cooling tower is lateral air intake. In this cooling tower, the coil mainly relies on heat conduction for heat exchange. The important feature of this operating principle is that it can greatly suppress the scale formation on the outer wall of the coil, thereby extending the service life of the equipment. Therefore, the crossflow cooling tower is particularly suitable for cooling high-temperature fluids or fluids with large cooling temperature differences. When high-temperature fluids need to be processed, the crossflow cooling tower is undoubtedly the first choice.

3. Mixed flow closed cooling tower: Comprehensive advantages, preferred for various cooling occasions

The mixed flow closed cooling tower combines the advantages of counterflow and crossflow. Its spray water is mixed with the hot air direction to form a unique cooling effect. In the tower, the spray water flows from top to bottom, and the wind is divided into two paths: one part of the cold air flows from top to bottom, and the other part enters horizontally from the side. These two winds cross-exchange heat with the falling spray water in the packing layer, thereby reducing the temperature of the spray water. Mixed flow cooling towers are suitable for a variety of fluid cooling occasions, and can achieve good cooling effects for both low-temperature and high-temperature fluids.

4. Choose a closed cooling tower: comprehensive consideration, high-yield and energy-saving

When choosing a closed cooling tower, we need to make comprehensive considerations based on factors such as the characteristics of the working fluid, cooling requirements, and site conditions. If the cooling demand is large and the temperature difference is small, a counterflow cooling tower may be a good choice; if the cooling demand is small but the temperature difference is large, a crossflow cooling tower is more suitable; and when the cooling demand and temperature difference are more diverse, a mixed flow cooling tower can take into account various needs. By reasonably selecting the type of closed cooling tower, we can achieve a more productive and energy-saving cooling effect, bringing more convenience and benefits to production and life.
